This quote marks the beginning of a change in point of view. Not everyone is included in the story because Shackleton and a few others left to retrieve a relief ship. The point of view is of Wild's crew told by the narrator. They can only hope the Caird makes it to land. It is not known what is going on with Shackleton's journey to find help for the rest of the crew.
Everyone has their own unique point of view in life. Not everyone sees the same things as everyone else. Having different points of view is important in life. Some of these points of view can help us see how we can improve upon ourselves and our surroundings.
