This quote displays the characteristics of a round character. The significance of this quote is that it displays how, over time, the men are starting to doubt Shackleton in some of his decisions. In the beginning, the whole crew trusted Shackleton with everything, they never doubted any of his decisions and always went with them. Also, many others that were very optimistic right after they abandoned ship, were beginning to lose that optimism. They were beginning to wonder if they would ever get to safety.
This can also relate to many of our lives. Sometimes over time we begin to mature and learn more about ourselves and our surroundings, therefore, we begin to change in many different ways. We begin to behave more like an adult and learn that life is not all fun and games.
