Endurance-Section 1 Ch 1

"Nor did the Antarctic represent to Shackleton merely the grubby means to a financial end.  In a very real sense he needed it-something so enormous, so demanding, that it provided a touchstone for his montrous ego and implacable drive" (13).
     This quote is an example of an archetype.  This quote is effictive because it can relate to many different people.  Many people have a drive inside them that is much the same as Shackleton's.  The purpose of the quote is to show the reader the reason behind Shackleton's whole point in undertaking the voyage.  Also, it shows how he is the best leader for this kind of expedition because of his take charge attitude and his experience and passion.  This quote relates to many people's lives in that they go from job to job without finding any area of interest.  That is until they find a job with a very large challenge that they want to take on in the field they find interesting.  This is something to keep the person going on in life.
