Endurance-Section 7 Ch 2

"...they picked up the three articles that remained and started off for the station, now only a mile or so away" (272).

This quote is the resolution of the expedition.  They have almost completed their journey to find help for the twenty two men stuck on Elephant Island.  They made it to the place they originally sailed from.  This is they day they have long awaited since they Endurance sank.  The difficult journey they faced was worth all the effort they made.
There are many points in our lives we go through challenges.  It is often a relief to overcome these challenges. The resolution of these challenges can end in glory, safety, or accomplishment.

Endurance-Section 6 Ch 5

"If this figure was accurate, they were a scant 91 miles from the western tip of South Georgia. . ." (239).

This quote can be seen as a foreshadowing that they will make it.  They just went though they worst storm of their journey and were at the verge of ending up at the bottom of the ocean, but they pushed through.   Also, they were the underdogs in this "battle" they went through.  This in turn put a fierce determination in them to make it. From this, the reader can foreshadow that with this determination, they will land.
Many times in our lives we are also the underdogs in many things, but we keep going.  In many of the battles, we are the underdogs and have to exert much more energy and power than we may want to.  We may not have completed them just yet, and the battles we face may be bad enough to change minds about going on, but in the end, we develop a determination to finish.

Endurance-Section 5 Ch 4

"For the twenty-two men who turned their faces inland, the excitement was past and the trial by patience had begun (195)".

This quote marks the beginning of a change in point of view.  Not everyone is included in the story because Shackleton and a few others left to retrieve a relief ship.  The point of view is of Wild's crew told by the narrator.    They can only hope the Caird makes it to land.  It is not known what is going on with Shackleton's journey to find help for the rest of the crew.
Everyone has their own unique point of view in life.  Not everyone sees the same things as everyone else.  Having different points of view is important in life.  Some of these points of view can help us see how we can improve upon ourselves and our surroundings.

Endurance-Section 5 Ch 2

"Shackleton had already made up his mind, after long discussions with Wild, not only as to who should be taken, but who should not be left behind" (187).

This quote is an example of motivation.  The quote uses motivation because Shackleton and Wild act the way they do so that the party that is left behind keeps their morale.  They don't want to leave someone that is pessimistic and will hurt the optimism of the party left behind.  But at the same time, they need to bring people who can pull their weight.  Although they leave a pessimist or two behind, they leave behind enough optimistic people that they will outweigh the pessimism.
This quote can relate to my life very well also.  At times, we are required to make choices on what to take on a trip or something of the sort.  I have to remember that some stuff shouldn't really be taken, but on the same token, I have to think about what I should not leave behind.  Those choices are not always easy though, we take the stuff we need to take, but we can't always take what we want to take.

Endurance-Section 4 Ch 5

"They were on land.
It was the merest handhold, 100 feet wide and 50 feet deep.  Am meager grip on a savage coast, exposed to the full fury of the Antarctic Ocean.  But no matter- they were on land.  For the first time in 497 days they were on land.  Solid, unsinkable, immovable, blessed land (175)".

This quote shows the turning point of the novel.  This is significant because they are finally on land and are closer to be rescued.  They can now build shelters which will better protect them since they were stuck on their boats for so long.  The conditions of all the men will most likely improve or will not become worse.  They might be able to better take care of those who were not doing well.
This example of a turning can relate to our lives because we experience many turning points throughout our lives.  These turning points can be anywhere from learning to ride a bike or graduating from high school.  Turning points almost always have a significant impact on our lives.

Endurance-Section 4 Ch 1

"Toward eleven o'clock, Shackleton became strangely uneasy, so he dressed and went outside.  He noticed that the swell had increased and their floe had swung around so that it was meeting the seas head on.  He had stood watching for only a few moments, when there was a deep-throated thud and the floe split beneath his feet- and directly under No. 4 tent in which the eight forecastle hands were sleeping (144)."

This quote contains an example of an inference.  From his experiences with the floes, Shackleton felt something was going to happen to the floe they were on.  This is another example of how Shackleton is a strong leader.  After that happened, he decided to stay off the floes unless they absolutely needed to get on one.  He wanted to stick to the boats as much as they could either by rowing or sailing.  He was not interested in taking any more risks because of the desperate situation.
All people make inferences based off of their past experiences.  People try to learn from what has happened in the past to avoid problems in the future.  Inferences can be simple observations or a part of an important decision.

Endurance-Section 3 Ch 6

". . . Worsley obtained a sight which removed all doubt that what they had sighted was Clarence Island, 52 miles away.  Even more important, the position showed that the westerly set of their drift had been arrested, and that they had gone 8 miles very nearly due north in the past two days.  An enormous wave of relief passed through the party" (135).

This quote is an example of the changing mood of the novel.  Everyone became less optimistic than they were when the ship first sank.  Their optimism lasted for a long duration but began to lessen after being stranded on the floe for a long time.  The sight of land changed everyone's state of mind to something more hopeful.  This change was very important to the crew because they were beginning to become restless from the repetition they experienced everyday on the floe with nowhere to go.  They were unable to take to the boats until the floe broke apart.
People sometimes experience changes in their state of mind based off of what happens to them or others.  It could be for the better or for the worse.  This in turn can affect the mood they are in and display around others.  This in turn can affect the mood of those around them, being for the better or worse.

Endurance-Section 3 Ch 1

"Greenstreet wrote that he considered it 'rather foolish...as things have not turned out at all as he had estimated up to the present, and it is far the best to be prepared for the possible chance of having to winter here'" (103).

This quote displays the characteristics of a round character.  The significance of this quote is that it displays how, over time, the men are starting to doubt Shackleton in some of his decisions.  In the beginning, the whole crew trusted Shackleton with everything, they never doubted any of his decisions and always went with them.  Also, many others that were very optimistic right after they abandoned ship, were beginning to lose that optimism.  They were beginning to wonder if they would ever get to safety.
This can also relate to many of our lives.  Sometimes over time we begin to mature and learn more about ourselves and our surroundings, therefore, we begin to change in many different ways.  We begin to behave more like an adult and learn that life is not all fun and games.

Endurance- Section 2 Ch 3

"Walking was treacherous because the porous ice would unexpectedly give way, letting a man plunge into a water-filled ice pocket up to his knees or even his waist" (76).

This quote is an example of figurative language.  It uses imagery to show the reader how bad the conditions were after they abandoned ship.  The effectiveness of the quote is that is shows that the members had to be very careful on their journey.  One thing that this really affected was how cold and wet they were.  They ended up only being able to keep so many pairs of socks and mittens, but could only keep the clothes on their back and about two pounds of personal items each.  Therefore, if they got wet, then they stayed wet until they gradually dried.
This can relate to anyone's life in the simple matter that all over the world, there are different obstacles we have to face on journeys we undertake.  Some being simple in that a vehicle makes it easier to pass, but others are very difficult such as what the men on the Endurance went through.

Endurance- Section 2 Ch 1

"Periodically throughout the day, little groups of men made pilgrimages back to the derelict that had  been their ship" (64).

This quote tells of the difficult decisions the crew had to made after the wreck.  The men were always faced with the dilemma of what to take off of the ship whenever they went back.  They were only able to take what was important.  The only value of any item that truly mattered was the value that it would have for the journey to safety.  Speed was the most important thing to the men.  They had a food supply that would last at least two months on full rations.
Many times we have to try to take only the important things with us when we move on.  This can be very difficult because of our longing for that possession/thing.  An example of this could be a person's first car.  Over time they grow to love it and care for it and contains a lot of memories, but for some reason or the the other, it is necessary to get a new car and move on from the first.

Endurance-Section 1 Ch 2

"By the time she was launched on December 17, 1912, she was the strongest wooden ship ever built in Norway-and probably anywhere else-with the possible exception of the Fram, the vessel used by Fridtjof Nansen, and later by Amundsen" (20).
This quote is an excellent example of irony.  The effectiveness of this quote is that from the first chapter, you already know that it does not make the voyage for them.  Even though it was the strongest ship of the kind at t he time,  it did not meet the challenge of the horrible ice packs in the Weddell Sea.  Although it makes it a good way and does prove its strength in some of the harshest weather and attacks from the ice, it was not made to withstand the pressure of the ice, since it was the worst conditions in a long time.
This quote can easily be related to a situation that we all know so well.  Some irony in itself is that it sank not only a few years before in an ice field in the Atlantic.  The Titanic was claimed to be the strongest and most durable ship to set sail on the Atlantic Sea and was even claimed to be unsinkable.  Yet, both of these ships, despite how strongly built and suited they were, they both turned out to be sinkable and not as durable as everyone believed they were.

Endurance-Section 1 Ch 1

"Nor did the Antarctic represent to Shackleton merely the grubby means to a financial end.  In a very real sense he needed it-something so enormous, so demanding, that it provided a touchstone for his montrous ego and implacable drive" (13).
This quote is an example of an archetype.  This quote is effictive because it can relate to many different people.  Many people have a drive inside them that is much the same as Shackleton's.  The purpose of the quote is to show the reader the reason behind Shackleton's whole point in undertaking the voyage.  Also, it shows how he is the best leader for this kind of expedition because of his take charge attitude and his experience and passion.  This quote relates to many people's lives in that they go from job to job without finding any area of interest.  That is until they find a job with a very large challenge that they want to take on in the field they find interesting.  This is something to keep the person going on in life.
